FILTER GRADES OF LENSES USED IN FUNK SUNGLASSES
These products comply with European Directive 89/686/EEC
in accordance with standard Pr-EN-1836:1997 (sunglasses for
general use).
FC 0: Comfort, design.
FC 1: Weak sunlight.
FC 2: Average sunlight.
FC 3: Strong sunlight.
FC 4: Exceptionally strong sunlight. Not
suitable for drivers and road users.
FUNK sunglasses are equipped with solar filters, conform
to EN 1836 standard (January 1997 edition) and the provisions
contained therein in order to guarantee that the fundamental
requisites regarding health and safety prescribed in CE-Directive
89/686/CEE have been met.
Furthermore all FUNK sunglasses conform to the American and
Australian protection requirements ANSI Z80.3, AS1067.1/2,
CSA.Z94.5.
All glasses are made from scratch resistant and shatter-proof
polycarbonate.
FUNK sunglasses only use high quality materials. Also we
use the new material Grilamid for the latest models in the
FUNK collection. This material is extremely flexible and easily
mouldable.
The sunglasses are checked at the manufacturer and secondly
at the FUNK headquarters. All FUNK sunglasses pass through
two quality review processes.
All FUNK sunglasses are delivered in a 8base-space-case case
or in a soft FUNK bag.
HOW SUNGLASSES PROTECT YOUR EYES
Sunglasses protect your eyes from dangerous light. The technologies
and coatings for sunglasses that make this possible are as
fascinating as they are varied. When you go to buy sunglasses,
we advise you to look for features that provide the protection
you require for the purpose you plan to use your glasses.
TINTING
Sunglasses are tinted various colors. The color tint determines
which colors of light the lenses absorb. The most common method
for tinting involves immersing the lenses in a special material,
so that the tint is absorbed into the plastic lens.
One goal for tinting is to reduce the amount of blue light,
which can create glare (known as blue haze). Here’s
what different color tints will do:
- Purple and rose tints provide excellent contrast when the
background is green or blue.
- Green tints reduce glare and offer high contrast. They
filter some blue light.
- Amber and brown tints reduce glare and absorb high frequency
colors. They do a good job absorbing blue light.
- Yellow and gold tints almost eliminate blue light. They
make things look bright and clear, but they can distort colors.
Yellow and gold tinted glasses are best in the snow.
- Grey tints reduce brightness, minimally distorting color,
and protect against glare. They’re a good choice for
driving.
PHOTOCHROMATIC SUNGLASSES
Photochromic sunglasses darken when they’re exposed
to sunlight thanks to a chemical reaction between the lenses
and UV radiation. Molecules in photochromic lenses are transparent
to visible light but change shape when exposed to UV light,
absorbing visible light and causing the lenses to grow darker.
Indoors, the reaction reverses. Photochromic sunglasses only
darken when exposed to UV light; in your car, for instance,
they won’t darken because the windshield blocks most
UV light. Generally, most photochromic lenses have some tint.
MIRRORING
Reflective coatings, called a half-silvered surface, give
sunglasses a mirrored look. The coating reflects about half
the light that strikes it. Mirror coatings sometimes change
shades from top to bottom, adding protection from light coming
from above, but letting more light come straight through.
ANTI-REFLECTIVE COATING
Anti-reflective coating reduces back-glare, the light that
hits the back of the lenses and bounces into the eyes. It’s
made of a hard, thin film, which is layered on the lens.
All FUNK products utilize the highest quality materials:
FRAMES
Most of the “plastic” sunglasses are made out
of grilamid. In theory, grilamid is a rugged, resilient frame
material that’s specially formulated for flex, impact
strength and dimensional stability. In practice, it’s
tough enough to withstand the most aggressive physical punishment
your body is willing to endure.
UV (ultraviolet rays):
These are now known to be the most harmful of the sun’s
rays.
There are three types of ultraviolet rays:
UVA – are the principal cause of aging of the eye
UVB – are also harmful and the cause sunburn
UVC – potentially the most dangerous for the eyes, are
filtered by the ozone in the upper layers of the Earth’s
atmosphere
VISIBLE LIGHT
Visible light corresponds to the different colours that the
eye can discern. We have all at one time or another seen the
sun’s rays reflecting off snow in the mountains, along
the seashore or off water at sea.
Infrared rays: Infrared light carries heat they are not very
dangerous but they can cause eye damage after prolonged exposure.
LENS
The lenses are made out of polycarbonate. Our polycarbonate
lenses protect against dust, flies or flying debris and other
airborne irritants. Ultra light and optically precise they
don’t measure up to all ANSI standards for clarity and
impact resistant, they exceed them.
Our high quality polycarbonate lenses are required for outdoor
activity for three basic reasons:
1. To protect eyes form harmful UV-A/B/C rays of the sun
2. To enhance vision that can enhance performance of the wearer
3. Protect the wearer from foreign objects entering the eye
